Hong Kong will Test U.S. Box Scanning

Date: August 1, 2007

By R.G. Edmonson / Journal of Commerce

Customs and Border Protection announced that Hong Kong has agreed to participate on a limited basis in the Secure Freight Initiative.

Modern Terminals in the port will scan containers for radiation and make x-ray images of their interiors as part of the one-year anti-terror pilot program that Customs and the Department of Homeland Security established under the SAFE Port Act.

The terminal was one of two that tested the Integrated Container Inspection System beginning in 2004, a proof-of-concept project of integrated scanning technology.

The Secure Freight Initiative is testing the feasibility of scanning all containers at foreign locations before they are loaded aboard ships bound for the United Ships. Testing already is under way at Port Qasim, Pakistan; Puerto Cortes, Honduras, and Southampton, Great Britain.

Customs officials said that testing should begin by October.
